Canigo mbworld7/25/2023 This is noted by a rattle at start up coming from the front of the engine banks which doesn't disappear as the engine gets to operating temperature. The locking pins are harder than the plates and have a hard shoulder, instead of a rounded chamfer meaning that the pin gouges and scores the plates during normal operation leading to premature wear. Unfortunately the OEM camshaft adjuster plates are made of Chinesium grade steel(low quality steel) which is prone to premature wear. It's worthwhile to do other maintenance items while you have the heads off to do this. The fix for this is a set of ARP head bolts. If you have 2008 C63 with 165,000km its unlikely that head bolts will be an issue for you, but its definitely worth keeping in mind when purchasing a pre 2011 vehicle. Pre 2011 cars had a defect with the head bolts, causing them to stretch and allow coolant to enter the cylinder heads. Things to look out for when purchasing a vehicle with this engine are: There are a few known issues and weakness's with this engine, many of which have been well documented. The same basic engine architecture was used in the SLS and the GT3 racing car(M159). In general, the M156 is an exceptionally stout engine which was pretty well designed for what is essentially a road going race engine, and the first V8 engine to be designed by AMG. So that any current or future owners can refer back to here for any information. After seeing a number of posts from other W204 owners asking a lot of the same questions I thought I would compile a bit of a "guide" of all the usual questions that get asked.
